Cancer is generally a disease which affects the whole body, a fact which too often is not recognized by the physicians caring for patients with cancer. Therefore, except in cases of very early cancers or skin cancer, the cancer may have metastasized to other body sites by the time the primary tumor is diagnosed.

If drugs, which damage the immune system, are used, metastatic cells may proliferate since the immune system which normally keeps these cells from growing has been injured. The argument by some oncologists is that the "chemicals" kill all the tumor cells. That just doesn't happen. This fact is obvious by the overall failure of chemotherapy and radiation in controlling cancer over the last 50 years.

Our program is based on the major premise that in order to control cancer one has to make sure the individual is nutritionally sound. In addition it is of utmost importance that the immune system be programmed to kill metastasized cells throughout the body. In cancer patients, reprogramming of the immune system may be necessary to halt cancer cell metastasis.

The primary tumor is usually quite large and we believe as much of the cancer should be removed surgically from the body. Radiation therapy at times can be used to treat the primary tumor as well. We are aware that the surgical or radiation therapies put a great deal of stress on the immune system and puts the body into a state of catabolism (wasting). If we stay aware of the nutritional needs of the patient there will be a limited problem in recovery. The immune therapies begin at the first sign of a malignancy as does the nutritional therapy. At times patients desire to combine various conventional therapies with the nutritional and immune enhancing type. Most oncologist frown upon this and so it is best for the patient to be committed to one or the other although we certainly will work with the patient in any way that makes he/she comfortable.

Because of problems with absorption and an increased metabolic rate it is also quite important to give many extra nutritional supplements. The diet we recommend can vary from a macrobiotic type to one high in animal protein. This depends on the individual's biochemistry.

Before preparing a program to deal with controlling the malignant process we do immune system studies and basic biochemical analyses and appropriate scans. We also do various "tumor marker" blood tests to see if we can find one that is abnormal so we can follow that parameter as we treat the patient.

The program for the individual patient can vary from simple dietary and nutritional advice to an 8 hour per day intravenous program that is done in our center. Everything depends on the individual's ability to commit to the time, energy, and finances required. We truly individualize the program for each cancer patient.

Foods Associated With Cancer Risk
  1. Fat, smoked, and cured meat - Harmful nitrites and nitrates.
  2. Butter, cream, high-fat cheeses - Non-essential saturated fat.
  3. Margarine and commercial oils - Harmful compounds.
  4. Vegetable shortening - Hydrogenated vegetable oils
  5. Tropical oils-palm and coconut - Non-essential.
  6. Deep fat fried foods - Harmful compounds.
  7. Rich desserts - High sugar, fat, white flour.
  8. White bread, rolls, buns, pasta, cakes, cookies, pies, etc. - Lacks nutrients and fiber.
  9. Commercial whole milk - Excess fat, allergenic, estrogen, homogenization, pasteurization, and hard to digest for some.
  10. Highly processed foods - Chemicals, color, sugar, salt.
Optimum Health Foods
  1. Vegetables, fruit and fresh juices - Rich in vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.
  2. Whole grains - High in complex carbohydrates.
  3. Legumes - Provides needed protein.
  4. Nuts and seeds - Rich in essential oils.
Foods in Moderation
  1. Fish - High protein and essential oil.
  2. Low fat meat and poultry - High protein.
  3. Free range eggs - Excellent protein.
  4. Low fat milk products - Good protein, high in calcium.
